Implant supported dentures are a great option for someone who needs new dentures or has existing dentures and is unhappy with their instability. Implant supported dentures help to keep dentures stable and more fixated.
The process involves the placement of 5-10 implants on the upper arch and 2-7 implants on the lower arch. The more implants placed, the greater the stability of the dentures. Another advantage of placing implants is that they preserve bone volume around them, whereas with dentures alone significant bone loss ensues. So, implants under your dentures are the best option.
Once the implants are placed, a 4-6 month waiting period is required for the implant to fully integrate with the surrounding bone. Then bars are attached to the implants on the upper and lower. Your dentures are then fabricated to the optimal bite position and will have attachments which will snap onto to the bars. The amount of force with which you will be able to chew is significantly greater than with dentures alone. This is a quality of life enhancer.
